PT's Friday named 16-4A soccer MVP

League champion Pine Tree collected four superlative honors, along with five first-team selections on the 2005 16-4A All-District Girls Soccer Team, which was announced Wednesday.

Voting was done by the district's coaches.

The Lady Pirates posted a 19-4-3 record, including a perfect 10-0 run during district. Runner-up Henderson (17-6) received one superlative honor and also had four first-team picks. The Lady Lions advanced to the Region II, Class 4A regional quarterfinals for the second year in a row.

Lady Pirate senior forward Jaclyn Friday was tapped the district's most valuable player. She led the team in both goals (22) and assists (18). Friday has already signed a soccer scholarship with Sam Houston State University.

Senior midfielder Stephanie Casto (10 goals, 8 assists) was selected defensive MVP, while freshman sweeper Carolyn Leatherman earned newcomer of the year honors. Moved up to forward late in the season, Leatherman accounted for two goals and 10 assists.

Daniel Rich was named coach of the year.

Henderson's Whitney Gill, a freshman, was tapped offensive MVP after she led the Lady Lions in goals (29) and assists (20). Nacogdoches' Brandy O'Neal was named sophomore of the year and Center senior Vanessa Santana received the sportsmanship award.

Named to the first team for Pine Tree was junior midfielder Amy Holman (11 goals), senior defender Hayley Gurgrich, senior midfielder Tiffany Gee, junior forward Ashley Johnson and junior defender Eurie DeRoy.

Selected to the first team from Henderson was junior midfielder Macy Phenix (11 goals, 22 assists), sophomore defensive midfielder Taylor Estes (10 goals, 15 assists), senior goalkeeper Kim Cary and sophomore defender Caitlin Limp.

Kilgore had two players selected to the first team – sophomore Dana Deerinwater and junior Rosa Chavez. Other first-team picks included Nacogdoches' Elyse McMorries (Jr.), Haley Adams (Sr.) and Abby Pool (Soph.), Lufkin Hudson's Claudia Rodriguez (Sr.) and Meagan Martin (Jr.), and Center's Yuri Pineda (Sr.).

Selected to the second team were: Berri Primo (Jr.), Julie Vineyard (Jr.), Shelli Small (Sr.) and Georgina Cabrera (Soph.) from Pine Tree; Madision Phenix (Fresh.), Melissa Poole (Soph.), Patty Gonzalez (Sr.) and Sandy Gonzalez (Fresh.) from Henderson; Katelyn Dick (Soph.), Amanda Mixon (Soph.) and Shannon Martin (Sr.) from Kilgore; Kelley Christian (Fresh.), Sarah Robinson (Fresh.) and Rachel Hugman (Sr.) from Nacogdoches; Elizabeth Padilla (Sr) and Veronica Medina (Jr.) from Hudson; and Fernanda Rodriguez (Fresh.) from Center.
