Lady Pirates face Mesquite Poteet tonight

Pine Tree and Mesquite Poteet met back on Jan. 18. The match at Pine Tree Stadium ended in a 1-1 tie.

When the two teams square off tonight at Lindale's Eagle Stadium, there will be no tie this time around. At stake is a berth into the next round of the Region II, Class 4A state soccer playoffs.

Game time is set for 6 p.m. The Henderson Lions and Sulphur Springs Wildcats will follow in the second part of a doubleheader at 8 o'clock.

Pine Tree drew a first-round bye as the District 16-4A champion. The Lady Pirates will carry a 19-3-3 season record into tonight's Area Championship match. Poteet, which was the runner-up in 14-4A, won its bi-district game on Friday over Sulphur Springs 2-0.

Poteet is 17-5-1 on the season.

The Lady Pirates are led by senior forward Jaclyn Friday with 22 goals. She had the team's only goal in the earlier match with Poteet. Senior Stephanie Casto and junior Amy Holman have 10 goals apiece. Friday also has a team-best 17 assists, followed by Holman and Carolyn Leatherman with 10 apiece, and Casto with eight.

Poteet's Lady Pirates have a one-two scoring punch in Jordan Monty and Lauren Stanley – Monty has 28 goals and Stanley 21. Monty also has 11 assists, while Renee Wadsworth leads the team with 22 and Jessalyn Freeman has contributed 12.

Pine Tree is averaging 2.8 goals per match, while allowing 0.8. Poteet has averaged 3.9 goals, and allowed 0.7. Both teams have combined for 27 shutouts – Pine Tree 13 and Poteet 14, which includes Friday's playoff win.

Tonight's winner moves on to face either Highland Park or Nacogdoches
