HENDERSON – Three late goals by Henderson forward Samuel Arellano sent the Pine Tree Pirates to a 3-1 loss Tuesday night at Lion Stadium.
It was a scoreless battle in the first half.
The Pirates controlled most of the match and outshot the Lions on goal, 15-13.
‘‘The kids played well, but somehow we just cannot finish our chances,'' said PT coach Andre Lo.
The Lions scored from a counter attack with nine minutes left in the game. Two minutes later, Arellano capitalized on a missed header and a missed kick by the PT defense, dribbling in to score his second goal.
With continuous pressure from the Pirates, the Lions finally gave up a penalty with three minutes to play.
Pine Tree continued committing players forward. One minute later, the Lions came up with a big save in goal, and following a towering punt over the last Pirate defender, Arellano took advantage to score his last goal to seal the victory for Henderson.
‘‘Once again, we played good enough to win the game. We just have to gain more experience to avoid making mistakes at the critical period of the game,'' Lo said.
With the loss, Pine Tree falls to 4-3 in District 16-4A play and 9-8-1, overall.
In the JV game, Henderson scored a late goal to tie the Pirates 2-2.
Pine Tree travels to Hallsville on Friday night to begin the second round of district.
