Lady ’Dogs fall to Pine Tree — but only 1-0

By MITCH LUCAS  sports@kilgorenewsherald.com -

With two of their best players out of the lineup on Friday night, and with arguably the best team in District 16-4A coming to town, the Kilgore Lady Bulldogs could have folded up their soccer tents, mentally, and gone through the motions.

They didn’t.

Coach Heidi Hagan’s team lost a very hard-fought 1-0 home game to the still-undefeated-in-district-play Lady Pirates, but it almost felt like a win.

Kilgore was playing without Katelyn Dick, who has a leg injury, and without Dana Deerinwater, who was ill.
But the Lady Bulldogs got a huge effort from goalkeeper Rosa Chavez, who fended off 10 shots on goal by PTHS and got a lot of help from her teammates, who constantly batted balls away from the net.
Kilgore only had four shots on goal, however.

Stephanie Casto scored the game’s only goal for the Pine Tree Lady Pirates, getting the ball into the right corner of the net with 31:53 left in the first half.

Kilgore’s Bulldogs, coached by Whitney Keeling, were also facing Pine Tree on Friday night — the Bulldogs were on the road, and were leading 2-0 in the first half. No further information was available at press time. See more in Tuesday’s Kilgore News Herald.

The Lady Bulldogs, who were on a two-game winning streak prior to the Pine Tree loss, will head to Center for a varsity-only matchup on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. Keeling’s Bulldogs will host Center at 5:30, beginning with junior varsity, and varsity to follow.

The KHS boys have two home contests in a row: they’ll also be at home Friday night, facing Nacogdoches.
A correction: In a story earlier this week, the News Herald incorrectly identified a KHS player. The young lady’s name is actually Andrea Dukes, who wears No. 8 for the Lady Bulldogs.
