FROM STAFF REPORTS

Sunday, February 06, 2005

The Longview junior varsity rallied from a 1-0 deficit, and behind the goalkeeping of tournament most valuable player Jairo Perez, the Lobos defeated Mount Pleasant 2-1 in the finals of the Junior Muddog Classic Saturday night at Pine Tree Stadium.

After giving up an early goal at the 29:10 mark, Juan Ontiveros and Jeffrey Weatherspoon scored five minutes apart as the Lobos avenged an earlier 2-0 loss in Mount Pleasant on Jan. 25.

Ontiveros scored with 23:20 to play in the first half, getting an unassisted goal as dribbled through the penalty box, launching a shot that took the goalkeeper back into the goal. Weatherspoon took a pass from Javier Beltram for the go-head goal as 18:31 remained before halftime.

Perez, who had five saves in goal, and a strong defensive effort from sweeper Nick Tilley and defenders Josh Bradley and Hugo Flores, held the Tigers at bay through the remainder of the first half and throughout the second. Flores and Weatherspoon, along with Ricardo Martinez, were named to the all-tournament team.

Longview advanced to the finals with a 2-0 win over Whitehouse Saturday morning in a shootout. Perez blocked three of the four shots attempted by the Wildcats in the shootout.

Mount Pleasant also went to a shootout with host Pine Tree, rallying from a 3-1 deficit to tie the match. The Tigers then edged the Pirates 2-1 in the shootout.

The Pirates came back to finish third overall, beating Whitehouse in a shootout, 2-1. Jacob Dubois scored the Bucs' lone goal in regulation off an assist from Zack Williams.

In the shootout, Andrew Ellis and Nathan Lo scored for PT, while goalkeeper Robert Brown blocked all four attempts by the Wildcats.

Brown, Ellis and Dubois were all named to the all-tournament team.

Mount Pleasant's all-tourney selections were Marco Guiteres, Edwin Mendez and Fidel Memije, with Mitchell Muller and Shawn Morris being chosen from Whitehouse.

Overall, there were five shootouts during the tournament – four coming on Saturday.

In other games Saturday, Jacksonville defeated Henderson in the consolation final, and PT II blanked Hallsville 1-0 in a courtesy match. Jacksonville had defeated PT II in a consolation semifinal 3-1, and Henderson won a shootout over Hallsville, 2-1.
