FROM STAFF REPORTS

Thursday, February 03, 2005

The Pine Tree Pirates won its District 16-4A opener against rival Hallsville 1-0 Tuesday night at a wet and chilly Pine Tree Stadium.

It was scoreless in the first half with PT outshooting Hallsville 18-8. Matt Cain recorded fives saves, while Hallsville's Greg Stavinoha made 10.

"The Hallsville goalkeeper and the defense played an outstanding game,'' said Pine Tree coach Andre Lo. ‘‘They kept the game tight and used counter attacks, which produced several quality chances."

With persistent pressure, finally Tony Guillen was able to slice a header off a cornerkick from Jonathan Zimicki to seal the Pine Tree victory 14 minutes before the end of regulation.

"It was a good win and the players never quit, even though we are a bit banged up and physically tired,'' Lo said. ‘‘Every game will be a dogfight this year inour district. There are so many quality teams, any given team on any given night can get a victory.

Pine Tree, now 6-5-1 on the season, will travel to Lufkin Hudson on Friday.

In the junior varsity game, PT won 2-0. The JV will host the Junior Muddog Classic tournament at Pine Tree Stadium Thursday through Saturday.
