Mesquite Poteet capitalized on three Pine Tree defensive mistakes to notch a 3-1 victory over the Pirates Tuesday night at Pine Tree Stadium.
Pine Tree did outshoot Poteet 11-7, but could not convert them into goals.
After a scoreless first, Poteet scored on a penalty kick at the 52-minute mark after PT goalkeeper Matthew Cain drew a pushing foul.
At 66 minutes, a Poteet player ran from behind and scored their second goal when the Pirate defense stopped at the mid-line, expecting an offsides call after a long clearing from the Poteet defense.
The Pirates cut the deficit in half at 74 minutes as midfielder Tony Guillen was fouled in the box and Jonathan Zimicki converted the penalty shot.
Pine Tree continued to press the attack attempting to get the equalizing goal.
Mesquite Poteet, however, spoiled the comeback attempt in the final 43 seconds. A long throw from the PT 40-yard line and a defensive missed header led to final Poteet goal to seal the victory.
Jordan Dubois, Josef Aragon and Guillen performed well, along with solids efforts from sophomores Nick Dobbs, Jesse Reynolds, Zimicki, Jace Estes and Zach Williams.
The PT junior varsity defeated Mesquite Poteet, 3-1. The victory followed a 6-0 shutout of John Tyler last Friday in Tyler.
