Jose Lopez and Fermin Rodriguez each scored for Longview in the second half as the Lobos rallied for a 2-1 victory over the Pine Tree Pirates in both team's 2005 soccer season opener Tuesday night at Lobo Stadium.
It was the third straight year the Lobos under head coach James Wright had beaten Pine Tree. Longview won 3-1 last year and 3-2 in 2003. The Pirates' loss also spoiled the debut of new head coach Andre Lo.
Pine Tree had broken a scoreless tie in the first minute of play to start the second half. The Pirates took the opening kickoff at midfield, with Tony Guillen blasting in a shot from nearly 40 yards for a 1-0 Buc lead.
Guillen's play seemed to catch the Lobos off guard as there were no defenders within 10 yards of him when he ripped his shot just over the fingertips of Longview goalkeeper Willie Cloyd.
The Lobos had controlled the flow of the game throughout most of the first half, but they couldn't convert.
Austin Walvoord had fed a long pass to Blair Vanderbilt that was just wide of the net, and Isaiah Ponce had two attempts a header and breakaway, where he stole the ball from a defender, only to have Pine Tree goalkeeper Matthew Cain came up with a save each time.
The Pirates' Nathan Lo also ripped a hard shot that was cleared away in the Lobos' net for one of the few offensive opportunities by PT.
Longview tied the game at the 25:13 mark of the second half as Rodriguez headed in a cornerkick by Sergio Perez. The corner was set up as Lopez delivered a through ball to Rodriguez, who had beaten the defender. However, Cain was able to deflect the ball out of bounds.
The game-winner came with 20:27 to play as Lopez took a pass from Ponce and scored from 10 yards out. The Lobos had put together a hard offensive rush just minutes earlier as Rodriguez and Perez tried to beat the Pirates on a breakaway.
Longview returns to action Thursday in the Creekview Tournament in Carrollton. The Lobos open against Midland at 6 p.m.
Pine Tree will participate in the Birdville Tournament this weekend in North Richland Hills.
In JV action Monday, the Lobos defeated the Pirates 6-1 at Pine Tree Stadium.
